In a strange turn of events, President Donald Trump has actually come out in defense of Democrat congressman Henry Cuellear of Texas, who was indicted just last week for federal bribery charges.
A Department of Justice (DOJ) indictment is charging Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, with taking $600,00 from an Azerbaijani oil company with close ties to the Azerbaijan regime and Banco Azteca, one of Mexico's largest banks and one with large ties to the cartels. According to Axios, between the years of 2014 and 2021, Cuellar and his wife accepting these bribes in exchange for political favors. Both Cuellar and his wife maintain their innocence and Cuellar has announced he will run for another term.
Trump posted on Truth Social:
"Biden just indicted Henry Cuellar because the Respected Democrat Congressman wouldn't play Crooked Joe's Open Border game. He was for Border Control, so they said, ‘Let’s use the FBI and DOJ to take him out!’ This is the way they operate. They’re a bunch of D.C. Thugs, and at some point they will be paying a very big price for what they have done to our Country. CROOKED JOE BIDEN IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!"
The DOJ's 14-count indictment states that Cuellar agreed to "influence U.S. foreign policy in favor of Azerbaijan" and support the interests of Banco Azteca, however, it should be said that Cuellar did in fact openly support Azerbaijan on the House Floor when he made a speech in their favor, despite the fact that the regime supports the genocide of Armenians in their border conflict. The charges against Cuellar and his wife include conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery of a federal official, wire fraud, money laundering and acting as foreign agents.
Former Democratic presidential candidate, Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, has said that Cuellar should resign:
“While the bar for Federal indictment is high, trust in government is at an all-time low. That’s why I believe any elected official or candidate facing such charges should resign or end their campaign."
Back in 2022, Cuellar's Laredo, Texas, home and campaign office were raided by federal agents. In a statement he made on Friday, Cuellar defended both himself and his wife against these "allegations".
He stated:
“I want to be clear that both my wife and I are innocent of these allegations. Everything I have done in Congress has been to serve the people of South Texas. The actions I took in Congress were consistent with the actions of many of my colleagues and in the interest of the American people. Imelda and I have been married for 32 years. On top of being an amazing wife and mother, she’s an accomplished businesswoman with two degrees. She spent her career working with banking, tax, and consulting. The allegation that she is anything but qualified and hard working is both wrong and offensive.”
Cuellar was first elected to represent Texas' 28th Congressional District in 2004 and has served since. In 2022, he defeated his primary challenger, fellow Democrat Jessica Cisneros, by only 281 votes to reach the general election. So this begs the question, is it truly the case the Cuellar is being framed to make way for a more progressive candidate like Jessica Cisneros, or is he in fact taking money on the side to promote his own agenda at the expense of the American people? Did Trump just call it like it is, or did he just make a huge political mistake?
